Sromowce Niżne, Village in Lesser Poland, Poland
Sromowce Niżne sits at the foot of the Three Crowns mountain on the left bank of the Dunajec River, close to the border with Slovakia. The river divides the two countries here, while the village nestles in a narrow valley on the Polish side.
The village appeared in the first half of the 14th century under the management of the Order of Poor Clares from Stary Sącz. These nuns shaped the settlement's early growth and its ties to religious life.
The village maintains local craftsmanship traditions tied to the mountain character of the Pieniny region, visible in everyday life and local products. This connection to the surrounding landscape shapes how people here work and spend their time.
A pedestrian bridge connects the village to the Red Monastery in Slovakia, allowing visitors to walk across the Dunajec River. The walk to viewpoints above the gorge is short but can be steep, so sturdy shoes are useful.
The village sits at a special location where the Dunajec River has carved a deep gorge with steep rock walls that visitors can explore by boat. This route through the gorge is one of the region's most popular rafting trips.
