Saint John Chrysostom church in Polany

Saint John Chrysostom is a Greek Catholic church in Polany featuring a central dome above a Greek cross structure with architectural details inspired by Kievan church traditions. The building displays characteristic elements from Ukrainian ecclesiastical design in its proportions and decorative features.

The church was built in 1914 with financial support from Lemko emigrants living in the United States and sustained severe damage during the 1944 Dukla-Presov military operation. After the war, restoration efforts gradually returned it to active use.

The building has served two congregations at once since 1992: Greek Catholics honoring Saint John Chrysostom and Roman Catholics devoted to Our Lady of Czestochowa. The two faiths share the same sacred space in a living example of religious coexistence.

The space requires patience when visiting since two congregations share the building, which may affect visiting times. It is wise to respect local customs and remain quiet during any religious services or gatherings.

The building was designed by Rudnicki from Lviv and reflects the Ukrainian national style of the early 1900s. This design was remarkable for the area as it expressed cultural connections to Ukraine through its architectural language.
