Przewięź Lock, Lock and monument in Augustów, Poland
Przewięź Lock is a water passage structure in Augustów connecting Lake Studzieniczne and Lake Białe Augustowskie, fitted with wooden gates. The lock allows boats to pass between the two lakes despite their different water levels.
Construction of the lock took place between 1826 and 1827 under engineer August Szulc as part of a larger canal system project. It became the sixth lock along the waterway route designed to improve boat transportation in the region.
The lock plays a practical role in local water traffic, with boat operators passing through regularly to move between the two lakes. Visitors can watch the water level shift as the gates are manually operated by the attendants.
The lock area is easily accessible from the road, allowing visitors to walk around and observe the structure up close. The best time to visit is during boating season when active boat traffic makes the water movements more visible.
The wooden gates remain from the original construction period and have been maintained for nearly two centuries, showing how durable historical materials can be. Many visitors walk past without noticing these original features that reveal much about traditional craftsmanship.
