Paniewo Lock

Paniewo Lock is a twin-chamber system located along a historic canal in flat Polish terrain. The two chambers work together to gradually raise or lower boats between two lakes.

This structure was built in the early 1800s as part of a larger canal project to improve shipping. It suffered major damage during the mid-20th century and was later restored.

This lock is part of a canal system that people have used since the 1800s to move goods and boats. It demonstrates how engineers solved the practical problem of connecting waterways at different heights.

This site is best visited on foot or by bike since it sits along a canal path. Bring waterproof footwear and be aware that water levels can change depending on the season.

This lock is the only one of its kind in the entire canal system with two separate working chambers. Its wooden gate construction is a rare example of early engineering design.
