Tenczyn Castle, Medieval castle in Rudno, Poland
Tenczyn Castle is a stone fortress on Castle Hill at 411 meters high, featuring defensive walls, towers, and an inner courtyard. The structure shows a blend of medieval defense elements and Renaissance living spaces that remain mostly intact.
The initial wooden structure was built in 1319 by Nawój of Morawica and was later transformed into a brick fortress. It then served for centuries as the seat of the Tęczyński family and shaped the regional history of this area.
The castle shows how the local nobility lived and expressed their power through building. Walking through the rooms and towers, you can see how life shifted from pure defense to more comfortable living spaces.
You enter through the entrance bastion and walk along the defensive corridor that leads to the towers and upper courtyard. The best time to visit is from July onwards, when the paths are dry and easy to walk.
The castle sits on a former volcanic cone, which gives it a unique geological history. On clear days, visitors can see the Tatra Mountains from the towers, making the location particularly valuable.
