Polish National Ballet, Ballet company in Warsaw, Poland.
The Polish National Ballet is a professional dance company of around 90 dancers based at Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa in central Warsaw, staging both classical and contemporary ballet. The building houses several performance halls of different sizes, allowing for a varied program throughout the season.
The company traces its roots to the mid-18th century, when King Stanisław August Poniatowski established a ballet at the predecessor of Teatr Wielki. In 2009 the company became a separate institution, independent from the National Opera.
The Polish National Ballet performs at Teatr Wielki, one of the largest opera houses in Europe, whose neoclassical facade dominates central Warsaw. Inside, programs range from Swan Lake to works by contemporary Polish choreographers, giving audiences a sense of both tradition and new creative directions.
Performances take place in different halls within Teatr Wielki, so it is worth checking which hall your chosen show is in before you arrive. Tickets and schedules are available both online and at the theater box office.
Although the company is now an independent institution, it still shares the Teatr Wielki building with the National Opera, meaning that on some evenings both opera and ballet are performed under the same roof. This means a visitor can sometimes find two completely different productions running on the same night in the same building.
