Gorczańsko-Ochotnicka Chatka Akademicka, Mountain hut in Ochotnica Górna, Poland.
Gorczańsko-Ochotnicka Chatka Akademicka is a mountain hut located at 835 meters elevation in the Gorce Mountains near Ochotnica Górna. This wooden shelter sits on the southern slopes surrounded by spruce forests and can accommodate about 40 people in dormitory rooms with bunk beds, along with a fully equipped kitchen for self-catering.
The wooden building was originally built in 1960 by a local family and purchased by the Academic Section of PTTK in Kraków in 1988 to begin operations as a mountain shelter. A fire in October 2022 prompted reconstruction efforts to restore the structure with comparable student accommodation capacity.
The name comes from a mountain tourist song that became an anthem for the Student Club of Tourism Organizers at AGH University in Kraków. Visitors can feel the deep connection between academic hiking groups and this mountain shelter.
The shelter is best reached on foot and sits within easy walking distance from several local hiking routes in the area. It operates seasonally, so planning ahead and checking availability before arrival is important for a successful visit.
The name Hawiarska Koliba was less an official title than a nickname born from student tourism culture, showing how academic groups shape places through their traditions. This informal naming system preserves local stories that official documents rarely capture.
