Kotelnica, Mountain summit in Gorce Mountains, Poland
Kotelnica is a summit reaching 825 meters in the Lubania massif with dense forest coverage and two streams flowing from the Kotelnicki source. The peak sits within heavily wooded terrain where natural water sources shape the landscape.
German surveyors worked at the summit during the 1940s while constructing triangulation towers for mapping the region. Human remains were discovered during these surveying operations.
The name comes from local dialect describing natural depressions in the terrain and traditional winter shelters for sheep that shaped pastoral life in the Carpathian mountains.
The Main Beskids Trail provides access via a 9.5-kilometer route from Krościenko nad Dunajcem with 820 meters of elevation gain reaching the summit. Visitors should prepare for steep forest terrain with significant climbing.
The summit marks the boundary between two communities and overlooks Stara Polana where farming activities left traces until the 1980s. These abandoned pastures tell the story of long-standing mountain agriculture in the area.
