Szpiglasowa Przełęcz, Mountain pass in Tatra Mountains, Poland
Szpiglasowa Pass is a mountain saddle rising to 2110 meters that connects the Valley of Five Polish Lakes with the Morskie Oko lake basin in the Tatra Mountains. The route passes through steep rock sections and alpine vegetation on both sides.
Local mountaineering groups first developed this route in the late 1800s to connect two popular lake destinations. The path was refined over decades as visitors increased, with difficult rock sections eventually improved to make passage safer and easier.
The name comes from antimony ore that miners once extracted from these mountains. When you walk through the pass today, you are following a route shaped by centuries of mountain people and their connection to the rock beneath your feet.
Wear sturdy hiking boots and watch your footing on loose rock and steep sections, especially when wet. Visit during late spring through early autumn when snow has melted and the weather is more stable.
The rocky sections along the trail host rare alpine plants found nowhere else, such as Carpathian leopardsbane and purple saxifrage. These hardy flowers thrive in the thin soil and harsh conditions at this elevation.
