Szpital Świętego Ducha – Biecz, Medieval hospital building in Biecz, Poland.
The Holy Spirit Hospital is a medieval stone building located on the eastern side of the town hill, marked by brick walls and a prominent stone portal. The structure measures approximately 21 by 10.5 meters (69 by 34 feet) and displays simple, practical design suited to its original purpose as a healing facility.
Founded in 1395 by Queen Jadwiga of Poland, it remains the oldest preserved hospital structure in Polish territory. After falling into disrepair between 1991 and 1997, the building underwent major restoration work starting in 2004 to stabilize its medieval fabric.
A carved Jagiellonian eagle from 1487 adorns the portal above the entrance, brought from the nearby castle during the 17th century. This royal symbol remains visible on the building's facade and connects the place to its noble patronage.
The building sits on the eastern side of the town hill and is accessible from outside, though interior access may be limited depending on ongoing preservation work. Check local information before visiting, as visiting conditions can vary seasonally based on maintenance needs and building stability.
The institution was funded through tax exemptions on its land and estate, making it one of the best-endowed hospitals in medieval Poland at the time. This generous royal support allowed it to serve as a model for healthcare facilities across the region.
