Szyb "Bolko", Industrial monument in Bytom, Poland.
Szyb Bolko is a mining headframe with a four-story steel structure located on Kruszcowa Street. The engine house contains an electric hoist system that was originally designed to extract ore from the shaft below.
The shaft began operations in 1906 as part of the region's zinc and lead mining industry. Later it was transformed into a pumping system to manage water from abandoned mining areas.
The shaft structure stands as a reminder of the mining tradition that once shaped Upper Silesia and the identity of Bytom residents. It reflects how extraction industries defined daily life and work in the region for generations.
The site is accessible on Kruszcowa Street and serves today as the Central Pumping Station Bolko, draining water from former mining areas into the Brynica River. Visitors should know that this is an active industrial facility where access may be limited.
The engine house contains an electric hoist motor manufactured by Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft in 1905. This German engineering innovation allowed ore to be extracted more efficiently from greater depths than older methods permitted.
