Świnoujście Fortress, Military complex in Świnoujście, Poland.
Świnoujście Fortress is a Prussian military complex at the mouth of the Świna River, made up of several separate forts, including Fort Gerhard and Fort West. The structures are linked by underground passages and defensive embankments that together form one connected system.
The fortress was begun in 1848 by Prussia to control access to the Świna River mouth. It remained in active military use through the end of World War II.
The fortress functions as a military museum where visitors can see original weapons and equipment from different historical periods on display. The collections show how soldiers lived and worked in those times.
Some parts of the complex can only be reached by boat, departing from the town center wharf. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a layer for the wind, as the terrain is uneven and exposed to the river.
The fortress was built on marshy ground, so its builders had to engineer drainage systems that are still working today. Walking through the underground sections gives a rare sense of how much effort went into making the site stand on wet soil.
