Fort I, German military fortification in Toruń, Poland.
Fort I is a German military fortification in Toruń with four armored towers equipped with heavy artillery pieces. The interior contains extensive underground passages, ammunition lifts, and interconnected observation points that allowed defenders to monitor all approaches.
The fortification was built between 1888 and 1892 as the most advanced defensive structure of the German Empire's eastern territories. It was designed to guard strategic approaches and represented the peak of military engineering from that period.
The Historical Reconstruction Group REX operates the site and demonstrates how military engineers of that era designed defensive structures. Visitors can see how the fort reflects the engineering thinking of the late 1800s.
The fort is located at Winna Street 20 in Toruń and welcomes visitors for guided tours through underground passages and interior spaces. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the underground corridors can be damp and require careful footing on stone surfaces.
Three of the original rotating artillery domes remain intact and showcase 19th-century military engineering at its finest. These mechanical systems allowed defenders to swivel their guns rapidly to face threats from different directions.
