The House Under the Star is a Baroque townhouse in the Old Town Square of Toruń featuring a stone facade decorated with floral patterns and fruit motifs. A golden star crowns the top of the building and defines its distinctive appearance.
The building began in the 13th century and received its current appearance in 1697 when mayor Jan Zöbner, a wealthy merchant, undertook major renovations. These alterations transformed the structure into the Baroque form it displays today.
The building houses a museum dedicated to Far Eastern art, where visitors encounter Japanese weapons, Chinese porcelain, and sculptures from across Asia. This collection reflects how the space has become a place for learning about distant cultures and artistic traditions.
The museum is easy to reach from the Old Town and sits centrally on the main square. Visitors should plan ahead as certain days may have limited hours or special closures.
Inside stands a spiral staircase in Gdansk style, guarded by statues of the goddess Minerva and a lion holding a decorated shield. These architectural details from another region show the craftsmanship and wealth of the original owner.
