Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Toruń

The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument depicts the astronomer in scholar's robes, holding an astrolabe in one hand while gesturing upward with the other. The bronze figure rests on a granite base adorned with decorative details that reflect the craftsmanship of its era.

The monument was unveiled in 1853, following several unsuccessful earlier attempts to honor the astronomer in his native city. Sculptor Christian Friedrich Tieck created the work after persistent efforts to properly commemorate the scientist's contributions.

The inscription on the granite base uses Latin words that capture the impact of his work in poetic form. Locals and visitors pause here to acknowledge the connection between this place and the scientific revolution that changed human understanding.

The statue stands at the southeastern corner of the Town Hall and serves as an easily recognizable landmark for visitors. The location is freely accessible and offers good visibility from various angles.
