Church of the Assumption in Racibórz

The Church of the Assumption in Racibórz is a Gothic brick structure with pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and three aisles that lead to a polygonal chancel. The building stands at 201 meters elevation and displays characteristic Gothic architectural features of its era.

The church was founded in 1205 and underwent several reconstructions following fires. A major rebuild occurred around 1300 by craftsmen from Moravia, who restored the building to working condition.

The church served both Polish and German-speaking worshippers from the 14th century onward, creating a shared spiritual space for different communities. This coexistence of languages and traditions shaped local religious practice and reflects how diverse peoples lived together in the city.

The building is located on Adama Mickiewicza street and welcomes visitors interested in exploring historical architecture. Regular religious services take place, so it is helpful to check ahead before planning a visit.

Inside the church stands a special chapel built between 1426 and 1446 specifically for German-speaking worshippers. This chapel represents one of the earliest examples of a dedicated space designed to support multilingual religious practice.
