Church of St. Anthony of Padua in Warsaw, Baroque church in Śródmieście, Poland
The Church of St. Anthony of Padua is a Baroque building in Warsaw's city center with a rectangular interior divided by columns into a central nave and two side chapels. The entrance porch on Senatorska Street features an ornamental 18th-century lattice gate that frames the doorway.
The original wooden church was founded in 1611 by King Sigismund III Vasa to commemorate the Polish victory at the Siege of Smolensk. During World War II the building suffered heavy damage, but was comprehensively restored between 1950 and 1956 under architect Karol Szymański.
The church is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and serves as an active parish where the community gathers for worship and prayers. Visitors can experience the daily spiritual life that continues within these walls.
The church is located on Senatorska Street in Warsaw's Old Town, easily reached on foot with nearby public transportation access. As an active parish, the building keeps specific worship hours, so visitors should check when they can enter, particularly during services and religious holidays.
In 1766 the monastery became a refuge for the famous traveler and writer Giacomo Casanova, who was hiding from authorities pursuing him in Warsaw. This unusual connection links the church to one of the most intriguing figures of the 18th century.
