Mauzoleum bitwy pod Ostrołęką, Memorial mausoleum in Ostrołęka, Poland

The Mausoleum of Ostrołęka stands on a former fortress site surrounded by a moat and houses a central hall containing a sarcophagus. Underground chambers hold exhibition spaces, while replicas of artillery pieces from the Congress Kingdom period are displayed across the grounds.

The mausoleum was built beginning in 1930 as a memorial to the Battle of Ostrołęka of 1831, where Polish insurgents under General Jan Skrzynecki fought Russian forces led by Field Marshal Ivan Dybich. Construction was interrupted by wartime damage and only recently completed through European funding.

The mausoleum was designed by architect Romuald Zerych and stands as a monument to Polish military history. It serves today as a place for national ceremonies and commemorative gatherings.

The site is easily walkable and features underground exhibition rooms with information and displays for visitors. It is best to allow adequate time for your visit as there are both above-ground and underground areas to explore.

The memorial was originally planned as the centerpiece for a centenary commemoration but had to remain closed for decades following wartime destruction. Today multimedia installations in the underground chambers present modern interpretations of the historical events.
