Obroki

Obroki is a residential district in northwestern Katowice that spreads along its namesake street in the Witosa District. Apartment buildings and shops line the area, while the Obroki Wholesale Market serves as the main commercial hub.

The area began in the 17th century as part of Załęże and later developed around the Cleophas mine, which operated from the mid-1800s. Mining shaped the neighborhood until the mine closed in 2004.

The XV High School building holds a memorial dedicated to Captain Witold Pilecki in one of its rooms. Plaques throughout the school honor resistance fighters from World War II who played important roles in the conflict.

The district connects to other parts of Katowice through several bus lines, making it easy to reach from other neighborhoods. Walking around gives you a real sense of how people live in this working-class area with its shops and everyday services.

The area preserves three traditional miners' houses from the early 1900s called familoki, which show how mining families actually lived in the region. These well-kept buildings offer a glimpse into the daily life of workers during the industrial era.
