Bederowiec, Historical settlement in Tysiąclecie district, Katowice, Poland
Bederowiec is a settlement spanning across Katowice and Chorzów municipalities, located near the entrance to the Silesian Zoo. The residential area is reached through Chorzowska Street, which connects the neighborhoods to both city centers.
The settlement was founded in the 1820s when parish priest Józef Beder established it on Chorzów-Dąb estates, giving it his name. It was incorporated into Katowice in 1924 as the city expanded.
The Church of Our Lady of Piekarska holds a stone cross in its garden that marks where the original Bedersdorf village once stood. This memorial connects the current neighborhood to its earlier roots in the landscape.
The area is easily accessible via Chorzowska Street, which connects it to the Zoo and both city centers. Visitors should know this is a residential neighborhood used for everyday living.
During the early 1930s, makeshift shelters appeared here as the economy faltered, and locals gave them the nicknames Morocco and Egypt. These temporary settlements reflected how residents adapted to hardship.
