Podwale Przedmiejskie Street in Gdańsk

Podwale Przedmiejskie is a major thoroughfare in Gdańsk that connects the old town waterfront area eastward through the city. The street runs alongside open green spaces on one side and residential buildings on the other, creating a clear division between historic and modern urban areas.

The street was originally called Vorstädtischer Graben before 1945 and featured apartment buildings lining both sides in that era. Its current layout took shape after World War II as the city was rebuilt.

The northern side of the street maintains open lawns, creating an unobstructed view of Główne Miasto while residential blocks line the southern portion.

The street has underground passages that guide pedestrians to tram stops, helping you avoid crossing over the main roadway directly. These tunnels make it easier to move safely between different areas along the route.

A tram shelter near Chmielna Street was completed in 2022 with ivy covering its walls, making it the city's first plant-covered transit stop. This small project shows how green elements are being woven into urban transport infrastructure.
