John III Sobieski Monument in Gdańsk, Bronze equestrian statue at Targ Drzewny, Gdańsk, Poland.
The Jan III Sobieski monument is an equestrian bronze statue located in Targ Drzewny square in Gdańsk. The sculpture depicts the king mounted on a horse in a dynamic pose, with carefully rendered details of armor and military attire visible from all angles.
The monument was created in 1898 and originally stood in Lviv. After decades in Warsaw, it was relocated to Gdańsk in the 1960s where it has remained since.
The statue represents Polish military success through its depiction of King Sobieski, who defended Europe against Ottoman forces in 1683.
The statue stands freely accessible in the square and can be visited at any time. It is best viewed during daylight hours when the bronze details and surrounding architecture are clearly visible.
The statue weighs approximately 7 tonnes of solid bronze, which made it resilient enough to withstand multiple relocations across decades. This durability is what allowed the sculpture to survive each transfer in good condition.
