Pomnik Jana Pawła II w Wadowicach, Bronze statue in Wadowice, Poland.
The Pomnik Jana Pawła II w Wadowicach is a bronze statue mounted on a granite base in front of the Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, standing approximately 2.5 meters tall. The sculpture is positioned at John Paul II Square, overlooking the town's central public space.
The statue was unveiled on August 30, 2006, by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz and Mayor Ewa Filipiak at the location where Pope John Paul II had visited the community. Artist Maksymilian Biskupski created the sculpture to commemorate this significant local connection to papal history.
The bronze figure shows Pope John Paul II in pontifical vestments with a pastoral staff and a gesture of blessing toward onlookers. This location holds special meaning for local residents, as it marks the place where the Pope met with the community during his visits.
The monument is accessible year-round and sits at the center of Wadowice, easily reached on foot from surrounding areas. Visitors can photograph the bronze figure from multiple angles and explore the surroundings of the basilica square.
Sculptor Maksymilian Biskupski had created a similar composition in Dukla in 1997, which sparked discussions about artistic repetition. Despite these debates, the work remains an important local reference point for Wadowice's connection to the late Pope.
