Prittwitz Castle

Prittwitz Castle is a 19th-century residential building on Krakowska Street in Katowice that contains 14 separate living units. The facade displays characteristic architectural details from that era and is managed by the Mining Housing Cooperative.

The building was erected in 1801 and initially served as an administrative structure for mining operations in the region. Later it was converted into apartments for mine workers and has held the official status of a protected cultural monument since 2020.

The building shapes the streetscape with its distinctive 19th-century character and now houses multiple families as a residential complex. The way it functions today shows how historical structures continue to live in the city's everyday life.

The building sits in a central location on Krakowska Street and is easy to reach on foot. Since it is a private residential complex, visitors can view it from the outside but should respect the privacy of residents.

The name comes from the former Prittwitz Shaft, named after Ernst von Prittwitz-Gaffron, an official in the mining administration. This detail directly connects the building's architecture to the city's industrial past and its leading figures.
