Terras de Bouro, municipality and town of Portugal
Terras de Bouro is a municipality in the Braga region situated within the Peneda-Gerês National Park, featuring green mountains, valleys, and flowing rivers. The area comprises several villages with stone farmhouses, small chapels, and scattered fields marked by old water mills, windmills, and grain storage structures.
The region has ancient roots including Roman roads like the Geira that connected Braga to Astorga with markers still visible today. Medieval times saw a Benedictine monastery as an important religious center, and Celtic communities left behind burial sites preserved in the hills.
Terras de Bouro preserves rural traditions visible in its villages and daily life today. Residents work small farms, practice traditional crafts from wool and linen, and maintain old water mills and windmills that show how people have worked with the land for generations.
The area is best explored on foot with many marked trails through mountains and valleys along streams and rivers. Most trails are beginner-friendly, and several viewpoints like Miradouro da Pedra Bela require minimal preparation.
The area is home to the rare Iberian wolf and an uncommon horse breed called garranos that roam freely on hillsides. Waterfalls like Cascata do Tahiti are difficult to reach but reward visitors with hidden pools and clear water for swimming.
