Theatro Circo, Theatre and cultural heritage site in Braga, Portugal
Theatro Circo is a theatre in Braga, Portugal, with a central foyer decorated in rose, white, and gold tones, supported by marble columns and ornamental stucco panels. The main hall continues this same decorative style, housing a stage with a full backstage area and seating arranged to face it.
The theatre opened in 1915, designed by architect Moura Coutinho, and soon became one of the main gathering points for the city's public life. In 1930, film screenings were added to the program, broadening what the venue offered its audiences.
The Theatro Circo sits on Avenida da Liberdade and draws people from across the city for operas, concerts, and dance shows. The foyer, with its marble columns and decorated ceiling, often feels as much a part of the evening as the performance itself.
The theatre sits on Avenida da Liberdade in central Braga and is easy to reach on foot from the main streets of the city. Guided tours covering the stage, backstage, and main hall are available, and the building has wheelchair access throughout.
Hidden behind the stage are small openings that let performers see the audience before going on, without the audience seeing them. This was an unusual feature for a theatre built in the early 20th century.
