Casa dos Crivos, Renaissance building in São João do Souto, Portugal.
Casa dos Crivos is a Renaissance building with a distinctive wooden lattice screen across its front, painted white with green wooden frames dividing the sections. The structure rises across three levels with different interior finishes on each floor.
The building was constructed in the 1600s during a period of growth in Braga led by Archbishop D. Diogo de Sousa. This expansion pushed the city beyond its medieval boundaries and established new urban areas.
The wooden lattice screen on the front let residents look out to the street without being easily seen from below. This design shows how people in Braga wanted privacy while staying connected to life happening outside.
The building is open on weekday afternoons and weekend afternoons with a lunch break on weekdays. Plan your visit in advance and allow time to see both the exterior details and the interior layout.
The interior staircase rises through all three floors using different materials on each level. Ceramic tiles cover the ground floor while wooden planks form the upper levels, showing how materials changed throughout the house.
