Alcochete, municipality of Portugal
Alcochete is a small town on the south side of the Tagus River near Lisbon in the Setúbal metropolitan area. It has narrow streets, old buildings, and flat land dotted with salt marshes that rarely rise above 35 feet (11 meters) above sea level.
Alcochete has been settled since ancient times and grew known during Roman rule for pottery and salt production. In the 12th century, the Portuguese king conquered it from the Moors, turning it into a center for farming, fishing, and trade with strategic importance for defending Lisbon.
Residents of Alcochete keep their traditions alive through summer festivals and local crafts. During August celebrations, they wear traditional clothes, enjoy fresh seafood from the estuary, and play folk music that reflects their connection to the river and the past.
The town is easy to walk around and is reachable by bus or car from Lisbon through the Vasco da Gama Bridge. The flat terrain and mild weather make outdoor walks enjoyable year-round, especially along the riverfront and near protected wetlands.
The town is famous as home to the Sporting CP youth academy, where many well-known players including Cristiano Ronaldo trained. The academy with several training pitches is one of Europe's top youth development centers and shapes the place's athletic identity.
