Estoril, Beach resort in Portuguese Riviera, Portugal

Estoril is a coastal town in Cascais e Estoril, Portugal, spreading along a bay with pale sand and offering a mix of multistory hotels, residential buildings, and public parks. The central esplanade connects the main beach to the casino and runs through palm-lined avenues and walkways overlooking the Atlantic.

The coastal settlement grew in the late 19th century when wealthy families from Lisbon built summer residences and the railway line facilitated connection to the capital. During the mid-20th century, international meetings took place here, shaping the town through the expansion of upscale dining and accommodation facilities.

The casino grounds include manicured gardens and a concert hall where classical and contemporary performances take place regularly. Locals gather along the waterfront promenade for evening walks, especially in late afternoon when families and athletes use the beachfront.

The train station sits a short walk from the beach and offers regular connections along the coast. A continuous footpath links the bay to neighboring towns and allows relaxed walks under different light conditions.

Several European royal families lived in rented villas around the town during political upheavals of the 20th century. Their presence shaped the reputation of the area as a refuge for personalities in transit.
