Monsaraz

Monsaraz is a stone-built village perched on a hilltop in the Alentejo region, featuring whitewashed houses and a medieval castle at its highest point. The settlement spreads across the summit and is ringed by ancient walls that reflect its strategic importance throughout the centuries.

The village was secured by Portuguese forces during the Reconquista after centuries of Moorish control in the region. The castle and fortification walls were built during this period to defend the border against Castile and maintain strategic control.
