Episcopal Palace, Braga, Episcopal palace in Sé district, Braga, Portugal

The Episcopal Palace in Braga consists of three connected buildings with crenellated walls that blend Gothic and Baroque styles across different sections. Today it houses a public library and archive services within its various wings and rooms.

Construction of the palace began in 1336 under Archbishop D. Gonçalo Pereira, with the medieval Gothic eastern wing completed during the 14th and 15th centuries. Baroque additions later expanded the complex as different archbishops made their own architectural contributions.

The palace shifted from serving as a bishop's home to functioning as a public library and archive that welcomes visitors. This change shows how religious buildings adapt to meet modern community needs while keeping their historical roots visible.

The palace sits between Santa Barbara Garden and Municipal Square, making it easy to locate and combine with visits to nearby sites. Plan time to explore both the exterior architecture and interior spaces, as the complex spans multiple areas.

The southern wing contains structures from three different centuries, each reflecting the building preferences of the archbishops who resided there. This layering shows clearly how needs and artistic tastes shifted across generations.
