Arco da Porta Nova, Triumphal arch in Maximinos, Braga, Portugal.
The Arco da Porta Nova is a triumphal arch in Braga combining Baroque and Neoclassical elements across two distinct facades with detailed sculptures and ornamental decoration. The structure merges these architectural styles in a harmonious way, creating a visually balanced monument.
Built in 1773 by architect André Soares, this arch replaced an earlier gate that was part of the medieval defensive walls from King Ferdinand's era. This transformation marked the shift from purely defensive structure to a representational city entrance.
The western side shows a female figure representing Braga and the coat of arms of Archbishop Gaspar of Bragança, while the eastern side is dedicated to Our Lady of Nazaré, reflecting the religious importance this location held for the city.
The arch stands at the intersection of Campo das Hortas and Rua D. Diogo de Sousa and remains accessible throughout the year. Visitors should expect narrow streets and historic walkways in the area, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
The monument was built without an actual gate, as its functional purpose had already become obsolete by then. This unusual feature inspired local sayings about Braga residents always keeping their doors open.
