The church displays a Neoclassical facade with decorative blue and white tiles attributed to artist Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes throughout its interior spaces.
Archbishop Agostinho de Jesus commissioned the construction of Igreja e Convento do Pópulo in 1596, selecting it as his final resting place until 1609.
The dedication to Virgin Mary mirrors the Church of Saint Mary of Populo in Rome, emphasizing the connection between Portuguese and Italian religious traditions.
The former monastery sections now house Braga Town Hall services, while the church maintains its religious functions and welcomes visitors daily.
Following extensive renovations between 2020 and 2021, nearly one million euros were invested to preserve the building's architectural elements.
