Castle of Castelo Melhor is a fortress structure on a hilltop in northern Portugal, marked by schist stone walls and a triple-arched gate. The complex includes a circular tower behind the northern wall and several rectangular building remains that are integrated into the natural rock formations within the courtyard.
The fortress was founded in the early 13th century when a king from the Leon dynasty issued a charter and ordered construction work to strengthen this border region. Subsequent periods left different layers of additions and modifications that remain visible in the building structures today.
The fortress carries a name that reflects its elevated position, and displays building elements from different medieval periods. Visitors can notice the mix of older and newer stone structures that reflect the different phases of its use.
