Torre de Anto

Torre de Anto is a four-story stone tower with a square footprint located in Coimbra's old town. The structure features a spiral staircase connecting its floors and arched doorways along its exterior, maintaining its medieval appearance.

The tower was originally built as part of Coimbra's medieval fortification walls. In the first half of the 16th century, it transitioned from military use to serve as a residential dwelling.

The tower takes its name from Portuguese poet António Nobre, who stayed there during his student days and left his mark on the place's identity. This literary connection attracts visitors interested in Portuguese literary heritage.

The tower sits near Rua de Sub-Ripas in the center of Coimbra's historic old town. It is easily accessible on foot and currently houses an art gallery where you can view changing exhibitions.

The tower preserves its original stone exterior and blends architectural elements from both military and residential Portuguese building styles. This mixture of styles reflects the building's transformation from fortress to dwelling.
