Igreja de São Tiago, Romanesque church in São Bartolomeu, Portugal.
Igreja de São Tiago is a Romanesque church in central Coimbra featuring a four-arch portal on its front and a southern entrance decorated with vine-motif frames. The interior contains three naves divided by columns, three side chapels, and carved capitals with plant and animal designs.
Construction began before 957, and the structure underwent major renovation in the late 12th century during the reign of Sancho I. This period established the form that visitors see today.
This church served as a pilgrimage destination for the local community throughout the medieval period and remains an important landmark in the old town. Its straightforward Romanesque style reflects the religious values that have guided the neighborhood for centuries.
The church is centrally located at Praça do Comércio within easy walking distance of other old town landmarks. Regular opening hours allow visitors to explore the interior and study the architectural elements.
A 15th-century quadrangular chapel with a Gothic portal was added to the north side, creating a noticeable contrast between this later addition and the original Romanesque walls. This side extension shows how religious buildings adapted over time to serve changing community needs.
