Porta e Torre de Almedina

Torre de Almedina is a medieval fortified tower in Coimbra that features a striking arched entrance marking the gateway to the old city center. The structure spans multiple levels and contains exhibition spaces displaying historical materials.

The tower was built in the 11th century as part of Coimbra's defensive walls and later became the center of city administration. From the 14th century onward, the city's governing authorities managed urban affairs from this location.

The tower now houses a museum that tells the story of how Coimbra's city administration developed over centuries. Visitors can see how governance and civic life were organized from this central location.

The tower is located in the old city district and is accessed via stairs that wind through narrow cobblestone streets. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for steep climbs between the different levels.

A bell tower inside once announced important moments in city life for centuries, from council meetings to the opening and closing of city gates. This bell fell silent in 1870, marking the end of an era when the tower helped regulate daily urban rhythms.
