Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, Faculty of Letters in Coimbra, Portugal
The Faculdade de Letras is a seven-story university building in Coimbra, with its main entrance set on the fourth floor and facing the Porta Férrea square. It houses a library holding manuscripts, rare books, and archives related to Portuguese literature and language studies.
The building dates from the educational reforms of 1911, when the First Portuguese Republic reorganized the University of Coimbra and created new faculties. It was at this point that literature and language studies were formally established as an independent branch within the university.
The facade carries four stone figures representing Eloquence, Philosophy, History, and Poetry, making the faculty's values visible from the outside. The forged iron doors with bronze motifs frame the entrance and give it a ceremonial weight that sets the tone for the building.
The main entrance sits on the fourth floor, so visitors enter the building from above and move downward through the lower levels. Those hoping to visit the library should check access conditions in advance, as it is primarily intended for registered users.
Two restored frescoes in the entrance hall depict Classical Antiquity and the Glorification of Portuguese Genius through allegorical scenes. Most visitors walk past them without stopping, even though they are displayed right at the main entry point of the building.
