Escadas monumentais, Monumental staircase in Coimbra, Portugal.

The 125-step staircase connects Praça D. Dinis in the University area to the intersection of Oliveira Matos, Venâncio Rodrigues, and Castro Matoso streets.

Built between 1942 and 1969 during Estado Novo period, the staircase replaced a smaller tree-lined structure known as Escadas do Liceu.

The staircase became a central location for student protests during the 1969 academic crisis against the Estado Novo dictatorship.

Two new elevators are planned for installation alongside the staircase, each capable of transporting 15 people across a 21-meter height difference.

The construction required demolition of residential areas and the last arch of the aqueduct to make way for new university faculty buildings.
