Lobão, Parish settlement in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal
Lobão is a civil parish in northern Portugal within Santa Maria da Feira municipality and spreads across a rural hilly landscape. The settlement comprises several smaller communities linked by farmland and workshops that support local industries.
The settlement's name has ancient roots documented from 906 as Lupon, which gradually transformed through Lubon into its current form Lobão over the centuries. This evolution from the personal name Lupu demonstrates continuous habitation and cultural continuity across more than 1000 years.
The community maintains strong craft traditions, with residents engaged in metalworking, woodworking, and textile production that shape the local character. These industries reflect the practical heritage and economic backbone of the settlement.
The settlement sits in hilly terrain with good road connections to the center of Santa Maria da Feira and surrounding municipalities. The rural character means having a car helps explore the various parts and local workshops more easily.
In 2013, the parish merged with three neighboring settlements to form a single new administrative unit called Lobão, Gião, Louredo e Guisande. This consolidation reshaped the local governance and combined the resources of four separate communities into one entity.
