Château de Portalegre is a stone fortress perched on elevated ground within the old town, its dark walls rising prominently above the surrounding whitewashed buildings. The structure spans multiple levels with towers that define the skyline when viewed from the lower streets.

History

King Dinis fortified the structure in 1290 with improved walls and towers to defend this border area against potential attacks from Castile. This strategic purpose shaped the fortress throughout the centuries that followed.

Culture

The Castle Museum contains an extensive collection of military artifacts and weapons dating from the 15th century through World War I.
