Castle of Portalegre

Château de Portalegre is a stone fortress perched on elevated ground within the old town, its dark walls rising prominently above the surrounding whitewashed buildings. The structure spans multiple levels with towers that define the skyline when viewed from the lower streets.

King Dinis fortified the structure in 1290 with improved walls and towers to defend this border area against potential attacks from Castile. This strategic purpose shaped the fortress throughout the centuries that followed.

The Castle Museum contains an extensive collection of military artifacts and weapons dating from the 15th century through World War I.

Access is available on most weekdays with hours that change depending on the season. Plan to arrive during morning or early afternoon, and be aware that reaching the fortress involves climbing stairs and navigating uneven terrain.

Inside, a double-level vaulted keep displays decorated corbels showing craftsmanship from earlier centuries. The Portuguese coat of arms sits prominently at a central point, marking the site's official importance.
