Salgueira Beach, Sandy beach in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal
Salgueira Beach is a sandy shore along the Atlantic coast near Póvoa de Varzim with wide expanses of sand and some rocky patches in the middle section. The beach extends along a considerable length and is framed by rock formations on either side.
During the 1800s, this place was called Praia dos Ceboleiros and attracted swimmers in long shirts who followed strict bathing customs. A local regulation from 1871 set limits on swimming attire.
The beach serves as a gathering place for local families who spend time by the water and watch fishermen at work along the shoreline. Visitors find a casual environment where swimming, walking, and watching the ocean are the main activities.
Lifeguards patrol the beach from June through September and mark safe swimming areas with flags during summer months. The sandy ground makes walking comfortable and beach access points are easy to locate.
Water sports enthusiasts take advantage of the central rock formations for wave surfing and benefit from a left-breaking swell with a confined take-off zone. This feature draws experienced surfers to the location.
