Farol da Lapa, lighthouse in Portugal
Farol da Lapa is a small stone lighthouse in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, standing beside the church Nossa Senhora de Lapa. Built in 1857, the structure has a simple, sturdy design with a modest tower that once guided ships and fishermen safely through the coastal waters.
The first mention of a light for this area dates to the 16th century, though it originally stood at a different location called Lugar do Facho. The current lighthouse was built in 1857 and from 1892 onwards worked together with another light at Regufe to guide fishermen safely through a channel between underwater hazards.
The lighthouse stands next to the church Nossa Senhora de Lapa, reflecting the deep connection between the community and the sea. Visitors can sense how fishing shaped daily life here and how faith remained central to the hope and resilience of local families.
Access to the lighthouse is through an old door on the north side of the church, dating to the 1600s. The stone stairs inside are steep and uneven, making the climb challenging, but the wide view of the sea and sky from the top makes the effort worthwhile.
In 1892, a terrible storm struck the coast, and the lighthouse helped guide many fishermen, but around one hundred and five lost their lives that tragic day. A painted tile on the church wall tells this story and stands as a quiet memorial to those lost and the community's strength through hardship.
