Sameiro Sanctuary, Marian sanctuary on Mount Sameiro, Braga, Portugal
Basilique Notre-Dame de Sameiro is a sanctuary located on the summit of Mount Sameiro, combining neoclassical architecture with twin bell towers. The structure dominates the skyline with its pale facade and commands attention from its elevated position overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Construction started in 1863 when a priest decided to place a statue of the Virgin Mary atop the mountain. The project expanded over subsequent decades, eventually becoming the grand basilica that took its final shape in the early 1900s.
Visitors light candles and leave flowers to express gratitude or seek help, creating a visible record of personal devotion. The pathways fill with these offerings, reflecting how meaningful this place has become to those who visit.
The mountain is accessible on foot, though the climb is steep and takes roughly thirty minutes. Sturdy footwear is advisable, especially when conditions are wet or slippery.
In 2004, the sanctuary received the Golden Rose, a rare Church honor recognizing exceptional contributions to faith and society. This award highlighted the international recognition the site has gained within the religious community.
