Cântaro Magro, Granite rock formation in Serra da Estrela, Portugal

Cântaro Magro is a granite rock formation in Serra da Estrela, sitting at about 1928 meters elevation. Nearby peaks create a landscape of exposed stone faces offering various climbing routes and walking paths.

This rock formation emerged as a nunatak during glacial periods, remaining uncovered while surrounding areas were reshaped by ice. The landscape around it was carved by glaciers over thousands of years, leaving this stone standing high.

The rock formation has become a gathering place for climbers and hikers exploring the region. It plays an active role in the mountain culture of Serra da Estrela, where people regularly come to test their skills on natural stone.

The best access is via National Road 338 heading toward Torre, where multiple routes begin at different difficulty levels. Visitors should be prepared for changing weather and steep sections, as conditions on exposed heights shift quickly.

On the southern slope sits the Rua dos Mercadores, a deep crevice system created by different erosion rates between doleritic rock and the surrounding granite. This narrow feature is an unusual geological oddity that hikers often discover while exploring the area.
