Fort of Giribita

Forte da Giribita is a coastal fort on a rocky outcrop with a pentagonal layout, featuring two circular bastions and multiple gun emplacements built into its walls. The structure rises directly above the sea, commanding views of the shoreline.

The fort was built in 1649 during the Portuguese Restoration War as part of a defense chain stretching from Cabo da Roca to Belém Tower. This position allowed control of maritime traffic along the coast.

The entrance gate displays royal emblems and an inscription documenting construction under António Luís de Meneses' oversight. The name and decorations at the entrance reveal the important role this place played in the defense strategy of its time.

The site sits along Avenida Marginal with direct access to nearby attractions such as Casa do Relógio and Praia da Torre. Visiting is straightforward as the area is well connected to the rest of Oeiras.

Throughout the centuries, the artillery configuration changed several times, ranging from two to seven cannons, reflecting evolving military needs. These adaptations show how threats and strategies shifted at this location over time.
