Church of Santa Cruz, Medieval monastery church in Coimbra, Portugal
The Church of Santa Cruz features a main portal constructed between 1522 and 1525, combining Manueline artistic elements with Renaissance architectural characteristics.
Portugal's first two kings, Afonso Henriques and Sancho I, rest in Gothic royal tombs within the chancel, placed there during the 1530 renovation.
The church choir displays carved wooden stalls from 1518 with detailed friezes depicting Portuguese naval vessels from the period of maritime expansion.
The monastery section now functions as a museum, offering guided tours in multiple languages to explain the religious and historical elements of the complex.
The church organ contains 4000 pipes decorated with Japanese motifs and requires four musicians to play it simultaneously.
