Lagoa de Albufeira, Protected lagoon in Sesimbra, Portugal.
Lagoa de Albufeira is a protected lagoon system in Sesimbra consisting of three interconnected water bodies: the Large Lagoon, Small Lagoon, and Estacada Lagoon. The entire area spans approximately 43 hectares and serves as a place for different water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, and canoeing.
The lagoon system received protected status in 1987 and became part of the National Ecological Reserve. This designation established a protected zone for numerous bird species and marine life.
Local fishermen maintain traditional mussel farming platforms in the lagoon, continuing a long-standing practice of sustainable aquaculture. This method shapes daily life on the water and shows how people and nature have worked together here for generations.
Different areas are designated throughout the year for various water activities like windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing. Plan your visit according to the type of sport you want to do, as certain zones are reserved for specific activities.
The water system receives freshwater from three different rivers and saltwater when the sand barrier becomes permeable in spring. With a maximum depth of around 15 meters, this alternation between fresh and salt water creates a special environment for the organisms that live there.
