Praia do Magoito, Atlantic coastal beach in Sintra, Portugal
Praia do Magoito is an Atlantic beach in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, set between dark cliffs with golden sand and scattered rocks along the water's edge. It has a car park, showers, sunshade rentals, a restaurant, and a bar on site.
The northern end of the beach has a consolidated dune that built up over thousands of years through wind and sea deposits. It is one of the clearest signs of how this stretch of coast has been shaped by natural forces over a very long time.
The beach sits within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which gives it a different feel from the busier spots further south along the coast. Visitors tend to come for the open space and the raw, unpolished look of the shoreline.
At low tide more sand opens up, making it easier to walk along the shore and explore the rocks. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, and it is worth checking the wave conditions before entering the water, especially when the sea is rough.
The seawater at this beach has one of the highest iodine concentrations found at any European beach. Even in summer the water stays noticeably cool, which surprises many first-time visitors.
