Ilhas Desertas

Ilhas Desertas is a protected nature reserve situated off the coast of Santa Cruz, consisting of three volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands feature rugged terrain and are surrounded by clear ocean waters.

The Portuguese government recognized the ecological importance of the islands and established this protected area in 1990. The designation expanded when the site joined the European Natura 2000 network, securing long-term conservation status.

These islands serve as a vital refuge for Mediterranean monk seals, whose presence shapes how the place is experienced and protected by those who visit. The site holds global importance for conservation efforts focused on preserving marine life.

The islands are home to one of the largest populations of Atlantic monk seals, making them exceptionally important breeding grounds for this rare species. These animals are almost nowhere else in the world found in such numbers.
